Grammy Award 2024 for Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain heralded unprecedented enthusiasm in India. The 2024 GRAMMYs were held in Los Angeles on the 4th of February 2024.

Shankar Mahadevan‘s and Zakir‘s collaborative band ‘Shakti‘ rocked the 66th Grammy Awards and won the prestigious Album award award for ‘This Moment.’ All-time great tabla maestro Dr Zakir Hussain was leading the musical path with three Grammy awards. Hariprasad Chaurasia’s nephew and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia just backed with two awards. Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram each shared delightful moments for winning Grammy awards for themselves.

Breathless Singing

Shankar is widely known for delivering a breathlessly elongated singing style. His album ‘Breathless‘ came in 1998. The Title Song ‘Breathless’ in that music album was remarkably sung for 185 seconds without pause. 

Indian music composer and playback singer Shankar Mahadevan was born on the 3rd of March 1967. The birth and upbringing of Shankar in Mumbai were as common as usual. His family belongs to the Tamil Aiyar community. 

He started playing the Indian classical music instrument Sarasvati Veena at a mere age of five. His vocal performance based on classical music was initiated way before his teenage years. Legendary music composer A R Rahman played a big role in shaping the career of Shankar Mahadevan.

Shankar Mahadevan is ethically attached to the spiritual and Indian classical while performing for Bollywood music as well. Shankar launched the album ‘Har Har Mahadev’ with India’s No.1 singer Lata Mangeshkar back in 2004.

Shankar Mahadevan’s Tamil family migrated to Mumbai from Palakkad in Kerala. Music ascended his mind and heart from his parents who were engaged with the symphony of the field. Shankar’s father K. V. Narayanan was also a musician and music composer, singer and songwriter while his mother Seetha Narayanan was the singer of devotional sons.

Shankar has sung in different Indian languages like Tamil Telugu Kannada and Malayalam including Hindi and Marathi. That total amounts to more than seven thousand altogether. Though Tamil is their mother tongue he is fluent in speaking in Hindi and English along with Marathi Malayalam and even Urdu. 

Shankar Mahadevan was conferred an honorary degree at a ceremony in the grandeur of Birmingham City University– a doctorate for his works in music. Earlier he graduated from Ramrao Adik Institute, Navi Mumbai as a Computer and Software engineer.

Now he runs Shankar Mahadevan Academy where students enrol and learn musical instruments, film songs, and Carnatic and Hindustani vocals online. 

Initially, Shankar started working as a composer for the ad jingles. Later, the renowned Shankar Ehsan Loy, a musical trio established that best reflects the social fabric in India. These three artists respectively belong to the Hindu Muslim and Christian religions. Their work ranges from Rock to Hindustani classical music and ad jingles.

Shankar and his wife Sangeeta

Shankar Mahadevan and Sangeeta Mahadevan had a simple love story in the past before they became life partners. Both the neighbours fell in love during their teenage period and faced a little adversity from Sangeeta’s brother and her Maharashtrian family.

The couple is lucky to have two children, namely Siddharth and Shivam. Descending further the same family vibes, Siddharth and Shivam are all set to compass big success in music careers.
